During your two years here, you can be trained in specialized skills such as Monitoring Evaluation, Conflict Resolution, and Crowdsourcing from experts in the field, while being deeply embedded with the appropriate professional networks. SIPA, however, is not only about acquiring skills and networking, but has rigorous academic caliber as well. During your two years away from the professional world, you will have the opportunity to be a student again. This is the time to once again bury your selves under thousands of pages of readings, tackle intellectual debates with your colleagues, and absorb pure knowledge from prominent guest speakers in the field of your academic choice. For example, I attended a talk titled “Race Thinking and the Sciences in French Colonial Vietnam” by Mitch Aso. Aso is a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin, focusing on environmental change and human health on the rubber plantations of southern Vietnam. His talk focused on how race was created through colonialism via biopolitical mechanisms such as agriculture and medicine. Through rubber production in Vietnam, certain ethnic groups were categorized as being barbaric laborers, even when a mix of ethnicities within Vietnam was conducting the same agricultural practices. In reaction to the malaria outbreak in Southeast Asia, the colonizers labeled certain ethnicities to be carriers of the disease and attempted to segregate those people. Aso illustrated concrete examples on how the concept of race is extremely complex; it can be created through political and calculative avenues. Racial identity is never concretely defined. The conversation also expanded to the concept of modernity and whether these new agricultural and medical practices actually modernized the indigenous people’s lives. A constant debate amongst anthropologists and philosophers surrounds the exact timing and definition of modernity. Was the western influence that detrimental to revolutionizing the lives of the indigenous communities? The concept of identity and modernity may be quite abstract and academic to be applied on daily affairs in international relations, however, a solid understanding of such notions are undoubtedly helpful. As an Economic and Political Development concentrator, even though I may never fully understand the philosophy behind how identity shifts when different countries interact with one another, but having some understanding will improve my development practices. In fact, in current development practices, there is still not enough research or analysis being done with regards to the local context or how that will be affected by the development intervention planned. Considering a non-practical and academic mindset may be necessary in thinking about how we conduct these operations. Going to such talks reminded me of the holistic approach SIPA offers â€" a combination of rigorous academic research and effective hands-on practice.

The Los Angeles Police Department has a reputation for using race as a basis to catch criminals. Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for believing an individual is suspicious of committing a crime. Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards people of color affects the justice system and violates people’s human rights. The LAPD continues to use racial profiling against mostly African-Americans and Latinos. The use of racial profiling by the LAPD prevents the police from serving the whole community. Because of the LAPD’s neglect towards certain neighborhoods, the neglect causes those communities to not trust or want to work with the police. Racial profiling should not be used by the LAPD because it is immoral,†¦show more content†¦The results were 38% of Whites and 89%of Blacks thought the justice system was prejudiced towards Blacks† (Chaney 483). The survey also showed that â€Å"8% of Blacks and 56% of Whites thought the criminal justice system treated Blacks equally† (Chaney 483). The survey shows that Blacks are less trusting of the justice system than Whites because of stereotypes and racial profiling. Because the LAPD uses racial profiling, racial profiling causes Blacks to not want to work with police because the LAPD is telling the African-American community that the LAPD does not trust the African-Americans. When the LAPD uses racial profiling, it sends a message that Whites are already assumed to be law-abiding citizens, whereas Blacks and Hispanics are assumed to be associated with criminal activities. Although people may say that racial profiling is justified if it is an effective way of catching criminals if race or ethnic characteristics help the police (Ryberg 79). In other words, police will arrest more possible criminals. However, this causes police to search for individuals who fit the profile and over look people who don’t fit the profile. Because of police targeting certain ra cial communities for certain crimes, the police-community relationship becomes disrupted (Dunn 561-4). The disruption causes people to not want to cooperate with police if the police are searching for suspects and the police need information. Romans were very strict to their religion and beliefs. In ancient Rome, people involved worshiping multiple gods and deities. The religion practice was in two different stages; state and family practices: the state worships were held by the government which were more organized. They worshiped multiple gods to seek success in all aspects of life, each god had its unique function and had been worshipped for the specific purposes; god of battle, god of love, god of peace and so on. In addition, there had been four colleges which have had control over the public and private religious practices. The two most important colleges were the Pontifices and the college of Augurs. The Pontifices college, as Warrior mentions, â€Å"had authority over the most important matters† (RR 48). Most likely, the accuracy of worshiping and sacrificing were depended upon Pontifices college priest’s approval and they would assure that the practice was in its accurate way. The Augurs college was in charge of overseeing and connection between religion and the politics. Most of the member of Augurs college were priests and professionals. Furthermore, in Roman religion, people believed that gods were involved in their daily activities. They had several religious festivals which were accompanied by the Olympic games, these festivals were held by the state authorities and were practiced in the public. One of these events called â€Å"the laughter of god,† which they held to seek the laugher of the god Apollo. According to† Apuleius† in the book â€Å"The golden ass,† â€Å"we are the only people who on this day seek the benevolence of the god laugher in an amusing and joyful ritual† (TGA 38). Among all other religious practices, this event was called the god laugher. In this event, in order to make the god happy, the government would gather all the citizens and held a laughter ceremony for the favor of god Apollo. They would find someone who is not aware of the ceremony and put him in a situation, while he was struggling in the situation they would start laughing to favor the god. The people who gathered knew what was happening but not the stranger who makes the god laugh. In Roman’s religion, the state and private practices were performed in many aspects, the religion was sought in different ways and for different purposes. One of the purposes of the state worshiping was sought for success in battles. Before the battle, they would seek the agreement of the god through worshiping and sacrificing in the ceremonies. Priests who were professionals in reading the signs of god would translate the signs, if the signs were suitable for the purpose they would prepare for the action, if not the worshiping and sacrificing were supposed to be redone for corrections. In conclusion, as I mentioned above, Roman worships were divided into the public and the private. Families would honor their household spirits while public worship was held by the government. Survivors Tale And Spiegelman Essay There is an old saying that a picture says a thousand words. Art Spiegelmansseries Maus: A Survivors Tale proves this saying to a tee. Added to thedialogue, a million possibilities arise. The series is a biographical comic bookabout his fathers experiences during the Holocaust. It uses cats, mice, andother animals to present this very delicate subject. The first book in theseries received tremendous adulation and received the National Book CriticsCircle prize in biography. However, the critics involved in this prize wereforced to ask two questions. Does a comic book represent the World Wars wellor not? and Was Spiegelman right to use the humor of a comic book toexpress the Holocaust? I will attempt to answer these questions by focusingon Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began. Using artwork combined with picturesserves many purposes. It allows the author to develop characters with a visualreference. It serves to fill in the blanks by cutting down the necessity to readbetween the lines t o understand the big picture. These can be seen as pros andcons. So Spiegelman attempted to reduce the gap between the dialogue and thepictures. I didnt want people to get too interested in the drawings. I wantedthem to be there, but the story operated somewhere else. It operates somewherebetween the words and the idea thats in the pictures, which is in essencewhat happens in a comic. This direct quote from an unknown interview done withSpiegelman shows that he meant to use the pictures only as a tool to express hisideas. If too much emphasis were put on the pictures, then whole story would notbe shown. However, if the pictures and the dialogue are read as one, then theentire story is expressed. Spiegelman says in the quote that he doesnt wantpeople to focus on the artwork, he just uses them to help the story along. Tohelp him with keeping the focus off the drawings, you can notice an extremeuniformity in the drawings. The appearance of characters are shown the samethroughout the co mic book, the facial expressions never change with emotioneither. The author uses the uniformity in the pictures to eliminate the overdescriptive nature of pictures. Instead, there are still things left to thereaders imagination. Spiegelman needs this uniformity throughout the comic bookso that Holocaust does not come across as a creative medium for writing. Insteadof using the drawings as a medium to show expression, he uses the drawings alsohelp him to express ideas that he does not want left to the imagination. Forexample, on page 70 in Maus II, there is a map of the crematorium buildings. The realization of Hitlers racism, as well asthe Americans, is shown to the fullest extent. In the end of the book, theAmericans are shown as dogs, and drawn as very fierce creatures. The small jokes that are embedded into thedialogue and the humorous misfortunes of the present day Vladek do a good job ofdistracting the reader from the sadness. In this passage,Vladek decides that he wants to return the box of Special K that is open andonly half full to the supermarket. He says that is because he learned toconserve food in anyway possible during the Holocaust. Later, he also says thathe saves matches by leaving the gas fire on all day. By using humor, Spiegelmanwas able to describe the lasting effects suffered by the survivors of theHolocaust in a lighter way. This was also probably the biggest con thatSpiegelman experienced while trying to describe the Holocaust as a comic. During the discussionof awarding one of Spiegelmans prizes, an argument was made, was he right inexpressing the Holocaust as a comic book. This literary medium did let him showthe Holocaust as he best as he could. With pictures, he was able to show morethan any novel ever could. However, I personally think that he was very wrong inusing humor simply because the actual victims probably dont find it funny,but that is a personal question only you can answer for yourself. English is blessed with numerous words to refer to the product of sexual union; progeny and offspring are only two of them. The gen in progeny, like the gen in genital, goes back to a Latin word for beget. Progeny, therefore, is a good all-purpose word to describe people, plants, and animals that are the product of sexual reproduction. Offspring is not so literal a word as progeny; it combines the verb spring with the adverb off. Offspring are what â€Å"jump off† from the parent. It has a friendlier, less formal connotation than progeny. Compare, for example, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth brought up their progeny according to strict ideas of efficiency. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth treated their offspring to a day at the beach. Here’s a list of synonyms that are or have been used with the meaning of progeny: babies brood children descendants family fruit of one’s loins fruit of one’s womb heirs issue offspring posterity progeny scions seed sons and daughters successors spawn young Like all synonyms, these words have different connotations. We speak of babies, children, family, and sons and daughters when we are talking about people in general. In matters of law, the words heirs and issue are used with specific legal meaning. A man’s children are called issue, usually in the sense of children who have a legal right to inherit. Indeed, brood is cognate with Middle High German bruot, ‘heat, warmth, hatching, that which is hatched.† The only word in the list that has an out-and-out negative connotation is spawn. Literally the eggs of aquatic creatures, spawn is used figuratively as both noun and verb to suggest that the progeny spoken of is undesirable. Because spawn is frequently used to refer to demons, as in â€Å"hell-spawn† and â€Å"spawn of the devil,† the word has become popular in the world of comics and novels about the forces of good and evil. As a noun, spawn can refer to any type of progeny that may be seen as potentially as bad as the parent. History of Tet Offensive Jordan Dingle The Tet offensive was an operation that took place in 1968 from January 30th to mid-August and was the largest military campaign of the Vietnam war. It involved nearly 80,000 North Vietnamese attacking more than 100 towns and cities in South Vietnam simultaneously. The offensive was a complete surprise to the South Vietnamese and the Americans, as it was thought to be impossible for the NVA to carry out an operation this large and no fighting was expected to happen because of the Tet holiday (Willbanks, 2007). This operation became a turning point for the American-Vietnam war as the offensive caused the U.S. to lose control of some cities temporarily and it showed the American public that the U.S. was not winning the war as the government had previously claimed. Prior to the Tet offensive, the U.S. faced declining support from the public in its foreign policy methods in Vietnam. U.S. citizens faced rising taxes and increasing U.S. casualty numbers in Vietnam. Many people were starting to feel that it was a mistake to send soldiers to Vietnam and that it was a hopeless cause. Public opinion polls at the time showed that the percentage of Americans who believed that the U.S. had made a mistake by sending troops to Vietnam had risen from roughly 25 percent in 1965 to about 45 percent by December 1967 (Willbanks, 2007). The U.S. military and President Lyndon B. Johnsons administration attempted to alter the publics viewpoint on the war by feeding the media optimistic information about the war. On the North Vietnamese side, there were concerns about the direction of the war and the affect it was having the capability of North Vietnam being able to sustain itself as country. Constant U.S. aerial bombings had decimated North Vietnams economic capability and the government realized that at the current rate, North Vietnam would lack the ability to affect the war in South Vietnam. The operation went into its planning stages in the early months of 1967 and was decided to take place on the Tet holiday to surprise unsuspecting American and South Vietnamese forces.   The North Vietnamese believed that the widespread offensive would cause the people of South Vietnam to revolt against the South Vietnamese government. While the offensive did cause the tide of the war to change, it did not cause mass uprisings (Bradley, 2009). The first phase of the Tet offensive began in the early hours of January 30th when the NVA and Viet Cong initiated attacks on all major cities in central Vietnam including Nha Trang, Hoi An, Pleiku, and Da Nang. On January 31st, another major attack was initiated in various major cities and bases in Southern Vietnam. Much of the forces in the operation were focused on South Vietnams capital, Saigon. North Vietnamese forces, while not able to take control of the city, managed to attack critical strategic points around the city. At the same time, the north Vietnamese forces and Viet Cong successfully attacked and captured the city of Hue in central Vietnam. It took the U.S. 25 days to fight back the North Vietnamese and retake the city (Willbanks, 2007). The North Vietnamese initiated a second phase to the offensive on May 4th and attacked various targets across South Vietnam again. But this time the Americans and South Vietnamese were prepared and the offensive was considerably less successful. The 2nd phase ended in late May. The third and final phase of the Tet offensive began on August 17th and was easily repelled by the South Vietnamese and Americans. This last attack was considered a dismal failure as it had little effect on any South Vietnamese or American positions (Willbanks, 2007). Although the Tet offensive did not achieve its goal of initiating uprisings throughout South Vietnam, it did inflict heavy damage on American and South Vietnamese forces. It allowed the Viet Cong to take control of the rural areas of Vietnam, especially in the Mekong Delta. The offensive put South Vietnam into turmoil as it was the first time that the war had reached any urban areas in South Vietnam. It reduced confidence in the government in their ability to protect its citizens from the Viet Cong. The battles that took place destroyed thousands of homes, displaced, injured and killed thousands of people. The human and material cost to South Vietnam was staggering. The number of civilian casualties was estimated by the government to be over 14,000 with at least 20,000 wounded.The North Vietnamese had suffered incredible amounts of casualties. Some estimates place the number of casualties to be over 180,000 dead during 1968.The offensive was the largest number of casualties that the North Vietnamese had faced in the war. The situation was so dire, that many Viet Cong cadres had to be replaced partially by North Vietnamese Army regulars. Although the North Vietnamese lost many soldiers in the South, they acknowledged the benefits of the Tet offensive. General Tran Do, one of the commanders in the battle of Hue, stated In all honesty, we didnt achieve our main objective, which was to spur uprisings throughout the South. Still, we inflicted heavy casualties on the Americans and their puppets, and this was a big gain for us. As for making an impact in the United States, it had not been our intention-but it turned out to be a fortunate result (Karnow, 1988). The aftermath of the Tet offensive also brought about more international influence into the Vietnam conflict. The Paris peace talks, which took place in May of 1968 initiated negotiations between the U.S. and North Vietnam while allowing third-party influence into the politics of the region. My Graduation Plan at IUBAT

Every student should have a graduation plan on their mind. A student couldn’t progress without his graduation plan. Such as, a boat without boatman or a computer without processor. Graduation plan refers to what we will do in our future, our educational plan at the organization and what we want to be just like the aim in our life. It’s very important to every student. I’ve also my graduation plan. I’m Shantanu Sarkar.I’m a student of BCSE at IUBAT. IUBAT- International University Of Business Agriculture & Technology. It’s the first non-government university established in Bangladesh. The initial planning began in 1989 and the university established in 1991. Degree programs started in 1992 with agreement with assumption university of Bangkok, Thailand. IUBAT strongly lobbied forth creation of non –government universities and supported the initiative of the government of Bangladesh in passing legislation for formal establishment of non-g overnment universities in the country. IUBAT now operates as a Non-government university Act of 1992. I’ve a graduation plan at IUBAT.I’m a student of BCSE (Bachelor Of Computer Science & Engineering). And I want to be a software engineer. So, the BCSE degree will be conferred only to the student who has fully complied with the graduation plans and has applied for it. Another symptom is not being able to stay still for an extended period often described as being on the go (Weis, 2018). Daniels mother described Daniel as having a lot of energy and always restless. Daniels mother also said that Daniel often had difficulties sleeping. An effective treatment for ADHD is psychostimulants, which Daniel was prescribed. The medication helped to improve Daniels academic performance and reducing his behavioral problems. S tudies on the effectiveness of parent training for children with ADHD have demonstrated positive outcomes (Atamanoff Gambert, 2007). Some children could have predominately inattentive presentation or the predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation. The research journal article gave good information about different studies done to examine the effectiveness of treatments with children and adolescents with comorbid ADHD and ODD. Reading The Boy From Boy, the textbook, and the research journal article I got more detailed knowledge about ADHD and ODD. Reading the story from a mothers perspective gives a more real example of what life is like living with a person with that disorder than just reading about disorders in a textbook. I also thought that reading from the different perspectives of the different family members gave an even better picture.
